Murder in the Vatican!
Giovanni Figlia checks all the boxes of a typical police detective. He even sacrificed his soccer career to follow in his father’s footsteps after he was killed in the line of duty.
But instead of being a typical police detective, Figlia is the head of Vatican security. He must keep the new pope from Africa, Pius XIII, safe from a world increasingly hostile to Catholicism.
Then a body falls onto the Vatican’s doorstep, and before Figlia can even start to track down the killer, more violence pours into Rome.
Can Figlia discover who is murdering scholars in the Vatican? What secret are they trying to keep hidden?
And can he keep the Pope safe?
Declan Finn’s debut novel has all the hallmarks that his fans have come to accept. A colorful cast of characters, Catholicism, and gunfights and explosions fill its pages. But in a Pius Man, he also mixes history with 80s action movie aesthetics, revealing the truth about one of Catholicism’s most controversial popes, Pius XII.

Badass characters with lots of flaws, trying to understand theological disputes while investigating multiple murders at the Vatican. All this action and political intrigue and police procedure gently leavened with Catholic creed and a truly kickass Pope (i.e. being a priest does not mean being a milquetoast). What is not to enjoy?

A thrill ride from beginning to end! The writing is absorbing even though it lacks technical polish. The heroes and heroines are real people, not cardboard cut-outs, and the villains are truly menacing. Finn has so many twists and turns in the plot that a reader cannot guess at what is coming with certainty until it happens. I hated putting “A Pius Man” down – a sure sign it is worth not only reading, but rereading.
